Research-based programming

Purdue University Libraries’ programming is informed by information literacy scholarship, which is a major research initiative among Libraries faculty. Demonstrating impact of information literacy-related efforts is critical, and Libraries faculty develop a variety of metrics for determining impact.

Empowers Purdue’s diverse communities of learners

Purdue Libraries value the varied backgrounds of learners at Purdue and adopt a learner-centered, active learning approach that takes into account the learning styles of a diverse population. We interact with learners in multiple environments (synchronous and asynchronous, inside and outside the libraries) and design learning opportunities that are inclusive of students who bring a broad range of abilities and educational and life experiences.

Critically use information to learn

The Libraries’ information literacy program fosters learning through critical engagements with information. The program is informed by Libraries faculty research that explores how students use information to learn. Scholarship in the area of information literacy is a major research initiative among Libraries faculty. Student-centered learning requires learners to find, evaluate, interpret, and apply information to solve problems and construct new meanings. The information literacy program aligns with the University’s mission for transformative education, which “challenges traditional teaching by changing the way classes are taught based on our research that identifies how today's students learn best.” 1 To enable transformative education across campus, Libraries faculty concentrate their efforts within strategic collaborations focused on student learning and success. These collaborations are often related to curricular and co-curricular experiences as well as the design of Libraries’ and other campus spaces and services (physical and virtual).

To create new knowledge

Purdue Libraries’ information literacy programming fosters scholarship. Purdue is a national and global leader in research and discovery, providing numerous research opportunities for Purdue undergraduate and graduate students. Libraries faculty and staff provide opportunities for members of the Purdue community to contribute to the body of knowledge and participate in the scholarly communication cycle.
